How Often Should You Wash Your Beard for Optimal Health and Maintenance?

Maintaining your beard, mustache, and facial hair in a clean, healthy, and well-groomed state not only shows others that you are tidy, hygienic, and attentive to your overall well-being, but also demonstrates that you are a man who takes pride in and cares for what you have. Given the proximity to your nose, mouth, and ears, it is essential to keep your beard clean, groomed, and conditioned. This prompts the questions of "what products should you use to wash/clean your beard or facial hair" and "how frequently should you wash your beard"?

Let's start with the question "what should you use to wash your beard or facial hair?" The best way to begin this topic is by identifying what products/ingredients you should absolutely avoid in beard washes. The majority of beard washes on the market are nothing more than cheap, hotel-grade shampoos; however, they are put into a cool-looking bottle with a 'viking' or some other mythical character on the label for marketing, and the average consumer thinks "this must be beard wash at its best." Most of these economical-grade commercial shampoos will contain ingredients such as perfumes or fragrances, acids, mixing agents, shelf-life extenders, and most harmful of all, alcohols. Alcohol has many uses and benefits, but when it comes to beards and facial hair, it should be avoided at all costs (unless a little seeps through your beard while drinking your favorite beer or cocktail). Alcohol, used in shampoos/beard washes, dries out your facial hair and strips your hairs of oils, nutrients, and more. This is why shortly after washing your beard with these types of products, your beard begins to feel dry, brittle, and a lot like wheat straw. Note: when assessing ingredients, be aware that the word 'alcohol' is often disguised as 'glyconol', 'propanol', etc., so a good rule of thumb is "if an ingredient ends in 'ol', run like hell."

The second question, "how often should you wash your beard?" is a personal one. It's a personal decision because, after all, it is your beard! This question became popular with the rise and popularity of beard products. This is due to the fact that cheap, hotel-grade shampoos were being presented and offered as beard wash, and consumers were experiencing dry, brittle, wheat-straw-like beards after the fact. Shortly after this, consumers started seeing additional product offerings such as co-washes, conditioners, etc., in an effort to combat the drying effects of their "beard wash" offerings. With this being stated, how often you wash your beard is entirely up to you—the beard owner. I personally wash my beard every day because I am very outdoorsy and active. However, I do not use washes or shampoos that contain the above-mentioned items/ingredients or that dry out my beard.
